Nauvoo Wedding Photography {Brianna and Joshua}

Nauvoo Temple weddings are when we are privileged to watch new family units begin, with cute couples like Brianna and Joshua. Their wedding session was one of quiet excitement with a little humor thrown in (see the photos below) and lots of kindness and love. It was easy to tell how crazy they were about each other during the deep, lingering looks they exchanged.

Brianna’s knee-length lace wedding dress was simply elegant with an aqua underlay and soft, sheer cape (sewn by her mother) flowing in the wind. Joshua’s navy suit sported a bright, cheery yellow mum, perfectly tying everything together.

Ahhh, summer weddings in Nauvoo. When flowers are in full bloom, birds are singing sweet songs, gentle breezes are blowing through the trees and the vast blue sky is dotted with puffs of white….and all is right in the world.

Reunion Portrait Elicits Fond Memories

photography cure for memoryHey….this is Jeanette here with two questions for you:

1 – How often do you flip through photo albums or rummage through a box of old photographs or reminisce while examining family reunion portraits hanging on the wall?

2 – Without photographs to jog your memory, how well would you remember details of get-togethers….or even remember the reunion at all?

Memories and details fade all too quickly as we age but thankfully, there is a modern “cure” for a bad memory. Photographs. And those reunion portraits are the ones that elicit such fond memories.

The Best Cure for a Bad Memory

I was 6 years old when this reunion photo was taken. It was my grandparents’ 50th wedding anniversary and my dad an his siblings had convened at their childhood home in East Tennessee. This image is the only photo I have of my dad with his parents and all of his siblings. My sweet dad is the handsome one with my little brother (and photo bomber) tugging on his hand.

family reunion portraits share with family

I only remember a few details of the event such as the decorated bakery cake (a rarity in those days), cousins everywhere, playing barefoot in the soft grass, swinging on the rope swing hanging from the tree, and the truckload of watermelon one uncle brought with him from Florida. Without this image, I wouldn’t even remember the event.

The clothing, the surroundings, and my cousin being added as one of the siblings says volumes and reminds me of many other family history details about each family member shown.

Leave a Record for Posterity

Photographs can preserve the magic and memories of family reunions and special events so they not only last your lifetime, but also extend into the lifetimes of your posterity.

So get that camera out, snap away, print those images, and have them available for viewing. Tell your children and grandchildren about those events and write down the details for your descendants. They will be ever so glad you did.

Awesome Family Summer Reunion Session

What do you get when photographing 13 adults + 29 kids in one session? Some say chaos. Some say crazy busy. We say it’s a sweet challenge full of antics, laughter, and catch-them-as-you-can moments.

Tom and Sandy’s family reunion session was this group. We have fond memories of watching the kids clowning between (and during) shots but my (Jeanette) favorite memory is with one little guy who didn’t want anything to do with me as I set a pose. I smiled and let him alone while he held tightly to mom.

A few minutes later when we were on to another family group pose, his mother approached and said her son shied away because he didn’t know me. So we were formally introduced….and afterwards he was my little buddy.

Learning to focus on kids’ names, who needs a nap, who is tired of posing, etc has made for success in getting the kids to enjoy the shoot. (Be sure to check out the before and after pics of my little buddy below.)

Dickinson Family Reunion in Nauvoo

Families of all ages and sizes gather for reunions around the world each year and many of those reunions happen in Nauvoo. Ages span from newborn to ninety. Groups range from a dozen to 250 or more. As photographers in Historic Nauvoo, we have the great privilege of meeting many who get together.

The Dickinsons were one of those groups. The family unit of mom, dad, and five sons has grown to include daughters-in-law and many grandkids…..and with all those granddaughters, mom is no longer outnumbered!

The adults were calm and caring. The kiddos were sweet, a little sassy, and completely adorable. Curiosity overcame any fear as they scaled fences to get close enough to pet the calves corralled nearby. Even the smallest ones able to walk stopped to take a good, long look.

See the pics below to see the calm, caring, adorable, and fearless……

Fabulous Nauvoo Family Portraits`

What makes for a fun family portrait session? Adorable kids, fun-loving siblings, and lots of laughter interspersed with infectious smiles. Marc and Jamie have just that kind of family and the images we caught are perfect examples of a fun session.

Three of their five children were married and except for one family portrait, you can’t tell who is the child and who married into the family. This is one family that melds well together and enjoys one another’s company.

The littlest ones were adorable with the cutest personalities. Look below to see what we mean….
