Photography Stuff You Might Want to Know: POSING

nauvoo family reunion tom simpson photographySit, stand, lean or prop? Walk, jump, or climb? What about hug or kiss, and where do the hands go? What about the feet? Shoulders angled or straight?

What is this list? Posing decisions made a multiplicity of times during photography sessions. With so many different ways to pose for a portrait, getting it right takes knowing the tricks of the trade…..and a professional will know how to make this work with ease.

After a quick assessment of the individuals’ size, height, age, and wardrobe, along with backdrop and setting conditions, we make the following posing decisions:

Angled or Straight

Shoulders are the widest part of the body. For men, straight on shots enhance masculine broad shoulders but not for women. A slight angle is both slimming and pleasing for a female’s shoulders and hips.

Arms and Hands

Straight arms glued to the body look stiff and unnatural in portraits so relax and bend a little, pulling arms away from the body a bit. For women, placing hands on hips or holding something makes upper arms look thinner, particularly when wearing short or no sleeve tops.

For men, folding arms across the chest gives a more manly appearance, especially for young men who want to appear older, cooler and “más macho”.

Hands have a myriad of places to land:

  • On a waist, hip, or knee
  • Wrapped around the neck, waist, or knees of your companion
  • Holding another’s hand or arm
  • Touching a cheek, shoulder, or chest
  • Resting on a nearby object such as a tree, ground, wall, fence, or chair
  • In a pocket, either whole hand or hooking a thumb in the pocket

Ever heard of creepy fingers? That’s the term we use when photographing groups when hands “creeping” over shoulders and around waists appear to have no arm attached. (We watch for this and usually get a laugh when it is mentioned after the explanation has been given during the session.)

Legs and Feet

The common saying in photography is, “If it bends, bend it.” That includes legs. Placing weight on one leg with the other slightly bent is a much more interesting and relaxing pose. Point the front foot toward the photographer.

Faces and Necks

Since most women tend to instinctively lean away from the camera, we often remind you to “lift and lean.” By lifting the head and shoulders then leaning ever so slightly toward the camera, slumping and double chins are eliminated or reduced.

Part way through a session of non-stop smiling, the face can get tired. That’s when the puffer-fish technique is handy. Filling your cheeks with air and blowing it out slowly will relax face muscles…..and be good for a few laughs too!

So, when you schedule a portrait session do you need to remember all these posing details? Nope. When you hire a professional, all you need to do is show up prepared to smile, relax, and enjoy looking your best. We’ll do the rest.

Summer Reunion Family Portraits in Nauvoo

Bringing your family to Historic Nauvoo for a reunion almost assures a memorable time together but when pioneer history is part of your heritage, the visit is even more meaningful. When Marla (and Rob who wasn’t able to make the trip) planned this reunion, they wanted to share their love of 1840’s lifestyle along with pioneer heritage with their grandchildren.

Marla planned ahead and made marble pouches for the boys and pioneer hats (that doubled as an apron) for the girls. Kids may not remember much of their visit to Nauvoo but they do remember time with cousins, the horses, and memorabilia brought home……especially when made by grandma.

See a few of their fun moments in Nauvoo below….

To Marla (and Rob who we missed),

Thank you for asking us to photograph your family during your reunion in Nauvoo. What a wonderful posterity you have! Your love of pioneer history and your love of one another was a joy to see. May you each receive the richest of blessings.

All the best!

Nauvoo Summer Fun Family Reunion Photography

If you have been to Nauvoo in July, these faces may be familiar. Helen owns Nauvoo’s favorite hangout, Annie’s Custard, and her kids help out during pageant season. Getting to photograph the family reunion was double treat for us.

Our portrait session with Helen’s family was most definitely summer fun…..and filled with laughter, joking around, and some silliness. One of the most memorable moments was Helen’s kids lining up for the siblings shot—each wearing a t-shirt that read “I’m Mom’s Favourite.” And for those from the USA, that’s not misspelled. Helen’s Canadian.

Enjoy the photos…..and next time in Nauvoo, be sure to enjoy custard from Annie’s!

To Helen,

Double delight. No, actually it’s triple delight. We love you. We love Annie’s Custard. And now, we love your family. It was a treat getting to know each of your kids better during the session. Thanks for the wonderful memories and the best custard ever.

Hugs!

Nauvoo Wedding Photography {Rebecca and Jason}

One of the best parts of wedding photography is watching the bride and groom as they look at one another during the session. You see excitement, happiness, and even a little fatigue (which can make an appearance on very hot days after a couple hours wearing a long dress and suit coat.)

Those looks are great but the best look is that glance filled with love, sweetness, caring, and kindness all rolled into one, particularly when they have a few minutes alone during the session to talk to one another.

Rebecca and Jason were every bit of this and more. Their love radiated. Their sweetness shined. Their caring and kindness for each other was evident, especially when keeping the bride cool between shots.

This wedding? Sweetness at its finest. Here’s what we captured…..

To Rebecca and Jason,

What a beautiful couple the two of you make! We enjoyed getting to know you during the session. Thank you for letting us be part of your special day…..with memories of the heat!

Wishing you the best life has to offer,

Family Portrait Wardrobe Tips

Family portraits elicit memories of past events, places, and most importantly, loved ones, but getting everyone together for a portrait session takes planning….and what to wear is always part of that plan.

We often get asked, “Do you have any suggestions on what to wear?” Why, yes we do! After years of working with groups of all sizes, we have compiled a list of tips we hope help in your wardrobe selection.

photo session clothing selection

First Things First

What is the main goal of any photography session? To record the subject as we see it…..and to create an art-worthy portrait you want hanging on your wall.

With any portrait, the viewer’s attention should go to the face first with the skin tone being either the lightest or darkest tone in the portrait. With a light toned background, you want light colored clothing. With a dark toned background, you want dark colored clothing.

What the Camera Sees in Your Wardrobe Color Selection

photo session wardrobe color selection tipsWhile we see everything in color, a camera measures tonality. See the gray scale chart? That’s what the camera’s light meter reads in your clothing—how dark or how light it is, not the color.

Keeping color selections in similar tonal shades rather than having extreme variations helps balance the exposure, maintaining clothing detail.

Where does the eye go immediately when looking at the portrait below? To the faces. Why? Clothing is in similar tones—not exact matching colors.

You have heard the phrase “a picture is worth a thousand words.” Here are our top nine wardrobe selection tips….using images (with just a few words!).

Choosing your Colors

Stick to a color palette but you don’t have to match color values exactly. While you may not want everyone to wear a bold color, a pop or two of color adds interest.

What about Patterns?

Avoid large graphics and logos but don’t be afraid of pattern. A little (small) pattern is a good thing. (Also notice the “pop” of color!)

Style, Style, Style…..

Opt for classic rather than super trendy for timeless photos.

The Skinny on Shirts

Wear long or ¾ length sleeved shirts. Bare arms draw attention away from the face.

Let’s Look at Legs?….or Pants

Long or Capri length work best as bare legs draw attention away from the face.

When Feet are Part of the Portrait

Wear shoes that can easily be slipped off for a barefoot look but shoes should be the same tone as the outfit so they do not stand out.

Jewelry? Or Not?

Avoid large pieces, as they can be distracting. The jewelry worn in this portrait is simple and adds to rather than distracts from the image.

‘Tis the Season

Don’t be afraid to dress for the season, especially cold weather. Shedding coats on a cold day just to reveal wardrobe selection can create stiff poses as you huddle together for warmth. Make coats and scarves part of your plan.

Color Coordination for Family Reunions

family reunion photography clothing colors

From dressy to casual to t-shirts and shorts, grouping families by color sets each individual family apart. Even with varying tones in these images, a skilled photographer can make it work.

Don’t be afraid to use color, pattern, and texture when deciding what to wear. Hopefully these tips will make your family portrait wardrobe selection easy and stress-free.
