What Does Photography “Processing” Mean?

Photography processing is nothing new. Greats of the past spent as much time processing as they did photographing their subject. Processing is the second half of a photography session and involves many steps not seen by the client.

What Does Processing Entail?

Professional photography processing is everything that happens after the actual photo session, such as:

  • Importing and backing up raw images
  • Culling or selecting the good images, deleting the unusable
  • Correcting exposure, color, contrast, and brightness
  • Removing distractions such as stray hair, blemishes, sign posts, photo bombers, crooked horizon lines, etc.
  • Applying style adjustments, cropping and sizing
  • Prepping images for posting, printing, or other distribution

Processing length depends on the project, session conditions, session length, and many other factors. It can take a few hours to a few weeks. The bigger the project, the longer it takes.

Image Comparisons – Before and After

Clients only see the final images but we thought you might be interested in seeing a few before and after shots. Check the list above and compare against the images below. Can you see the image enhancements made?

Processing Isn’t Magic

While post-processing allows professionals to edit data captured by the camera, it isn’t magic. It does not fix bad composition nor does it make the common request of adding missing family members to group shots always possible.

It is the place to fix small problems and adjust incorrect digital camera interpretations. Post-processing is one of the big differences between point-and-shoot-camera images and the work of a pro.

Why Processing is Important?

The importance of processing is two-fold…

For the photographer, it allows professionals to create their own look as they enhance images, which brands their work or makes their style identifiable.

For the client, it takes a virtual snapshot and transforms it into a photographic heirloom that can take your breath away.

And isn’t that what you want when you hire a pro?

Remembering our Dear Friend

Time passes quickly and quietly by each day until we reach one of those special milestones then it stops us in our tracks in remembrance. Today was one such day. It has been a year since we lost our dear friend Wendy.

She had one of those never-ending smiles that would light up your day. Always a kind word, even when she wasn’t feeling so great. Her sense of humor and wonder for this crazy world were contagious.

We were privileged to spend some time with Wendy and her sweet daughter Moira one crisp fall afternoon. She never let on how bad she felt, smiling through every pose and moving readily to each location.

They had two special requests—one of a pose with the squished up faces (what Wendy showed Moira’s dad when he asked what their new baby looked like!) and a pose of Wendy tossing her wig in defiance of cancer. Little did we know she would be gone a few days later.

Thank you for the sweet memories…..until we meet again.

To Wendy,

We love you and miss you but know you are still smiling down on your loved ones here. Until we meet again!

To Moira,

We enjoy getting to see you here and there, getting hugs and seeing your sweet smile. Know you are loved by so many!!

Hugs!

Nauvoo Wedding Photography {Victoria and Gabriel}

Winter’s stark landscape is no match for an elegant, dark-haired bride carrying a festive red rose bouquet standing next to a striking groom dressed in a classic, deep gray suite with red accents. Such was our wedding photography session with Tori and Gabe.

Their beaming faces and excitement for their wedding day in the Nauvoo Temple overshadowed any weather conditions. The entire bridal party braved cold temperatures and a brisk wind with unending smiles.

But what do we remember most? It isn’t the weather. It’s the gentle kindness and sweetness of these two as we were privileged to photograph their most special day….

God Bless!

Nauvoo Wedding Photography {Emma and Spencer}

Emma was the embodiment of pure elegance. Her wedding gown bodice, attached to flowing layers of chiffon, had rhinestones circling the waist and scattered across the lace top. She carried herself with graceful poise throughout the photography session.

Spencer looked dapper in his suit and kept an unending smile on his face as we spent a couple hours with the two on their wedding day at the Nauvoo Temple.

There were some lighthearted moments with nieces and nephews, friends, and the family pet that made day even more unique. Their love and affection for one another? It was as obvious as their excitement at the beginning of their life’s journey together.

Take a look and enjoy the day we enjoyed…..

Remembering Your Wedding: Album vs. Book vs. Print Box

black and white wedding photo in albumYour wedding…..that most special day when your life begins a new chapter. Did you hire a professional to capture quality images? Where are those images now?

This wedding album is 69 years old, from the 1950’s when print and display options were limited. There are 12 black and white prints in protective sleeves, inside a spiral bound, padded album….and it is a cherished heirloom.

Modern technology has not only increased the quantity of wedding images taken, but also made immeasurable display methods available making choosing the best way to display your wedding images a bit confusing.

That’s the reason for this post…..gentle guidance to help you choose.

We will concentrate on the three most popular methods—albums, books, and print boxes—looking at what each item is, rather than the myriad of options for each one. (We’ll save that info for another post after you decide what you want!)

ALBUMS

  • Paper Type: Professional lustre photo paper with UV coating.
  • Construction: Photo paper images mounted to premium substrate making pages rigid.
  • Page Style: Lay-flat or “flush” mount pages have no break or binding between the two adjacent pages allowing for continuous image across the spread.
  • Cover Options: Fabric, leather, print or combination over hardcover, with debossed text and padding available.
  • Pages Available: From 5 to 30 spreads. One spread = two facing pages.
  • Size Options: From 6×6” to 11×14” including vertical and horizontal rectangle sizes.
  • Finished Product: Substantial, heavier product with higher price point.

BOOKS

  • Paper Type: Uses press paper in semi-gloss, linen, pearl, or matte finish.
  • Construction: Images printed directly on pressed paper, no substrate, with images on each side of the page.
  • Page Style: Pages bound at spine like a traditional book or use of “hinge” for lay-flat style with separation between pages.
  • Cover Options: Fabric, leather, print or combination over hardcover with foil-stamping option on leather.
  • Pages Available: From 20 to 90 sides for “magazine style” books. Lay-flat hinged books from 20 to 40, 50, or 60 sides depending on paper selected.
  • Size Options: From 5×5” to 12×12” including vertical and horizontal rectangle sizes.
  • Finished Product: Lightweight, thinner and less expensive than an album.

PRINT BOXES

  • Paper Type: Professional lustre photo paper with embossed texture and UV coating.
  • Prints: 5×7” and 4×6” prints, with or without matting.
  • Construction: Image boxes – hardcover substrate wrapped on cover, spine, and back with optional image on inside lid panel. Wood boxes – solid box with slide-off lid and optional false bottom for USB drive storage.
  • Cover Options: Image boxes – fabric, leather, print or combination over hardcover. Wood boxes – printed image or engraved design on lid. Wood grain shows through lighter colors.
  • Capacity: Image boxes – holds 100 to 800 un-matted prints or 10 to 80 matted prints. Wood boxes – hold 200 or 350 prints, 20 or 35 matted prints. Capacity of each style depends on box size.
  • Finished Product: Professional customized presentation box or natural wood box to hold your wedding images. Price will vary according to size, capacity, and options selected.

No matter which method you decide to use for displaying your wedding images, aim to get something in hand within six months of your wedding day. Your emotions will still be fresh enough to enjoy the project but far enough removed to make final cut selections with a critical eye.

Be it album, book, or box of prints, have something tangible you can hold and share while snuggling with your grandchildren when they ask about your wedding day. You will both be glad you transformed your wedding images into an heirloom you and your posterity can appreciate for years to come.
